Ebbs And Flows

Nature has a rhythm of ebbs and flows; day vs night.  waves crashing, seasons of the year, etc.  Few things remain static or are in a simple state of stop and go.

Most of the time we interact with the sun is the time between sunrise and sunset.  Yet we attribute special meaning to the sunrise and sunset.  Why?  Perhaps because the exact moment of a sunset is rare, taking a mere minute out of the 24 hours.   A sunset also looks different to our eyes and skin from all the other hours of the day.  However, both of those concepts, the appearance and the timing, are simply illusions that our human brains interpret as meaningful.

In nature, the reality is that the rising/setting of the sun has very little meaning.  Most plants and animals are either nocturnal or diurnal (active in day).  Relatively few plants and animals are most active during dawn/dusk.  The sun shines on us all day long and we benefit from it being there, yet we attribute special meaning to the one moment it disappears.  Why don’t we appreciate the sun at high noon when it is giving us its maximum benefit?  A sunset does signal a transition into your restful state but relatively little action happens at this time since it’s just a moment.

Furthermore, there is no “end” to your day because it’s impossible to have all activity or all rest as they are both equally important.  The “end” is simply our perception of how we are interpreting the world, but the world continues to cycle regardless of our own perception.

If we would all take more time to observe things in our life as naturally occurring cycles, rather than simplifying our observations into binary manifestations, I believe it would help all of us cope a little better with the trials and tribulations we all face in our daily lives.
