Robots Do Not Care If We Call Them Bad Names
I was couch-surfing when Running Wild With Bear Grylls aired. He said something profound that struck me. He was reflecting on why he likes spending so much time in nature.
“Nature does not have emotions and it doesn’t care about yours. Nature just is. But it can be a reflection back to yourself.”*
I often hear people say that technology is a major source of their problems. However, the technology didn’t simply install itself. Like nature, the technology – just is. After all, robots just do what we tell them to do. We love to scapegoat the technology as a source of our problems, but in reality, the challenges we face can often provide insights to ourselves if we bother to dig a little deeper.
Transformation with digital
Said another way, the buzzword these days is “Digital Transformation” that puts the word technology first. No doubt, a successful digital makeover is important, but we need to go about it the right way . . . and that is not trivial. In fact, I’d argue the way we go about doing business or even how we personally carry ourselves is more meaningful than what we do. Folks that understand this understand that approach and mindset is the true differentiator. Failures of technology is typically a reflection of ourselves and we need to ask why.
If we agree we should be careful about over emphasizing technology, is the answer we need to go all in on a more humanistic approach? No, the right answer lies somewhere in the middle.
Please continue to join the conversation where we will dig deeper into some of the root causes and what we can do about it.
